Step-1: Press The F8 On Your Keyboard While The Computer Is Booting
To enter the recovery mode you need to press the F8 key on your keyboard while the computer is restarting. Going into the recovery mode is the simplest way to recover forgotten Linux password.
Step-2: Select “Drop To Root Shell Prompt”
When the Recovery Menu appears, select the option that reads Drop To Root Shell Prompt.
Step-3: Type Passwd <Username> Command
To successfully change the password you need to type in Passwd <username>. For example, if your Linux username is Roger then then type in Passwd Roger. Once the command is successfully accepted follow the on-screen instructions to change the password.
Step-4: In Case of Receive Authentication Token Manipulation Error Type mount -rw -o remount
If you receive an error that says Authentication Token Manipulation Error then the file system is set as read only. To bypass this error type in mount -rw -o remount and then repeat step-3.
