However, a complex password is also difficult to memorize and users often end up forgetting their login passwords. We take you through the simplest Windows 7 password recovery process so that you are back working in no time.
Step-1: Insert The Windows 7 Installation Disk And Boot The Computer
If you have an original Windows 7 operating system then you should have the bootable installation disk. Simply insert the Windows disk and restart the computer. Press a key while restarting to enter the installation and repair menu.
Step-2: Click “Repair Your Computer”
To commence the password reset process simply click on the Repair Your Computer link located on the lower-left hand section of the screen.
Step-3: Follow The Wizard And Click “Command Prompt”
Now, you simply need to follow the on-screen instructions till you reach the screen that displays the Command Prompt option. When you do, click Command Prompt.
Step-4: Enter The Following Commands
The first thing you need to do is create a backup of the sticky key file that will help you reset your password. Do that by typing in the following command.
copy c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe c:\
Now, you need to copy the executable file for command prompt over the sticky key file. Do that by typing the following command.
copy c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe c:\windows\system32\sethc.exe
Once both the commands are executed, simply restart the computer and reach the login screen.
Step-5: Reset The Password
Once at the login screen press the Shift key 5 times to launch the command prompt. Now, simply reset the password by typing the following command.
net user <Your New Username> <Your New Password>
Now, you can restart your computer and login using your new credentials. Once logged in, copy the Sethc.exe file from C drive to the Windows System32 folder.
